Sabotage! When Co-Workers Arent Up To Snuff
Sabotage When Co-Workers Arent Up To Snuff Sabotage When Co-Workers Arent Up To Snuff Recently I passed a candidate on to one of my clients. It welches a candidate that I spoke to briefly after he had been vetted and qualified by my Recruiting team and he seemed like a good match. Within ten minutes I heard back from my clientthey had already interviewed the candidate. Twice. (sigh) In these instances I automatically assume the candidate was dishonest with us and hid the fact that he had been submitted to the client previously. But alas, such is not the case. Turns out, he told the Recruiter. The Recruiter simply didnt tell me. After my migraine inducing meltdown I started thinkingit was easy to assign the blame to my Recruiter, but where did this break down and what could I to prevent it in the future?Taking Responsibility In many Agency models, there is a line drawn between employees who interact heavily with clients and employees who interact heavily with candidates. In my world , Ive been a hands-on Recruiter for years and still take part in all of my own searches. But as my time is focused more and more heavily in the client world, Ive had to start relying on my recruiting team to help augment my own recruiting efforts. So where does responsibility lay for such a blatant error? Should my Recruiter have told me that the candidate had been submitted? Yes, of course. Should I have gone back over the basics with the candidate before submitting him? Yes, of course. At the end of the day if Im passing a candidate on to my client, then I had better do my homework and deckblatt my own bases. Whether or not my recruiting machine is working at top form, I still have a responsibility to both my client and myself as a professional. If your coworkers arent cutting the mustard youll have to start taking steps to correct the situation. But in the meantime, every level of the life cycle is your responsibility.Training, Training, Training.and more Training Doctors go to c onferences and consistently go through training. Realtors have to maintain licenses and take continuing credits regularly. Teachers have to continually recertify and train. But what about Recruiters? Once were out in the business and making money we have a tendency to just put our heads down and keep going. But even great recruiters need a refresher. Its not necessarily about learning new skills (though some training in social recruiting and new recruiting technology is always great) but it is about getting back to basics. Once youve spent a good deal of time developing your crucial skills of perception, intuition and speed you can sometimes lose sight of the basics. Quick reminders and training surrounding the basics is always a good tact to take. Recruiters can sometimes resent it, but at the end of the day, its the stupid little stuff that kills deals.Communication So, after you have your migraine and stop spluttering in rage over the gelbkreuzgas deal, its a good idea to take a deep breath. Is it a one time mistake or is this a repeat issue? In either case, the right thing to do is communicate. You need to talk to your teammate and let them know what a small mistake has cost. This isnt a venting session, its not a chance to make yourself feel better. Instead, its a chance to prevent the same mistake occurring in the future. Keeping the lines open with your team and making sure that everyone knows what has occurred and how to prevent it in the future is key to your success. So as much as youd like to go packung someones ears or have a temper tantrum in the middle of the office, resist. Your job now is to protect your future businessand you do that by fixing the problem, not screaming about it.If you work with a team youre going to run into a number of issues over time. Whether its personality issues, office politics or a lack of professionalism youre going to have to deal with it. Why? Because its your business and we always stay professional when it comes to recruiting and when it comes to business. So keep your head up, your frustration down and try to address the problem. Good hunting

The Resume Graphics You Think You Dont Like
The Resume Graphics You Think You Dont Like The Resume Graphics You Think You Dont Like RESUME SPICE, OR RESUME LICE?/Image Michael MoffaSpice, or lice?- Graphics added to resumes seem to be, according to a kind of Net (net) consensus among recruiter and resume sitesIvereviewed, more like lice than spice. Although more visibly obvious than lice, the typical graphics add-ons make many a recruiters skin crawl as they crawl across the monitor screen. In the hands or on the screens of graphics-resistant or otherwise immunized recruiters, resumes with graphics are said to be virtually doomed to rejection. Graduation photos, watermarks, waterfalls, silhouettes, banners, bananas, logos, logs, phosphorescent/luminescent emaille addresses, pie charts, flow charts, sea captain charts, cartoons, Khartoum sunsets, musical bedrngnises, post-it leides, monograms, family crests, diplomas, diptychs, decorative headers and footers and myriad other festoonings draped onto a resume might as well be fu neral crepe, given the damage they are alleged to do to the applicants chances with many recruiters. The Official NegativesA recruiters negative reactions to and impressions of resume graphics can include any or all of theseThe graphics are mere padding to compensate for a paucity of substance. The graphics are there as a distraction from otherwise evident weaknesses in the resume.Graphics in a resume that actually belong in a portfolio make the resume look unprofessional.Head-shot photos create a potential legal problem, regardless of whether the applicant is hired (viz., as evidence of a legally disallowed bias toward the applicant) or leid hired (viz., as evidence of a legally proscribed bias, such as racial, against the applicant). The applicant is attempting insulting manipulation- by embedding images he or she believes will sway or derail profession judgment of the resume simply by displaying good looks or an irrelevant flair for graphic design.Larger images and decorative embell ishments use up too much printer ink.The graphics compromise or confuse the tone and message of the resume, especially when submitted for flinty, no-nonsense corporate postings with a lot of gravitas.Lurking Temptations? However, espousal of these objections to graphics, like the Decalogue declamations against the ten temptations of and to sin, may not be enough to prevent succumbing to them.True, the official, collective and public recruiter-industry stance or individual recruiters conscious mind may insist that photo and beautiful watermark-laced resumes will be deleted or dumped into the wastebasket, if not consigned to the flames. But suppose, contrary to these sincere declarations of professional intent, the graphics somehow manage an end-run around these psychological and professional defenses, through both software and wetware brain filters and into the hidden nooks and crannies of the unconscious mind.As a comparable out-flanking phenomenon, consider the intelligent chain-smok er who, between deeply and sweetly inhaled puffs and accompanying coughs says, Smoking will kill you, you know. The hypothesis that such circumvention of the mind and its rules by a swirl of embedded graphics can or does occur is not without some interesting supporting evidence- professional professions to the contrary notwithstanding. In fact, it would be surprising if the graphics didnt somehow succeed- at least a little and in some cases, even excluding graphic designer resumes and the like, where they play an essential and approved role.Primeval Graphic Distractions, Rewards and TemptationsIt should come as no surprise that graphics added to resumes may work, because they may have as much going on and going for as they have going against them1. They stimulate both right-brain and left-brain modes of information processing, which, as I explained in Recruiting the Left and Right Brains, makes the information more engaging, more readily comprehended and more easily remembered.Compar e how much more vivid yur high school analytical geometry was when you were able to see not only the left-brain equations, but also their right-brain graphs. If, like me, you barely recall even your school lunches, you should instead note how virtually all big-budget advertising combines right-brain graphics with left-brain text, in forms that that are presumably verboten in resumes, e.g., logos, photos, abstract designs and the likes of cartoon smiley faces. Note left-brain and right-brain are enclosed in quotation marks to emphasize that these refer to indisputable functions of the brain, not to actual or unknown locations.2. When the graphics include a very attractive photo, that image in all likelihood stimulates primeval responses triggered by face-to-face human communication that, until recently, was not only the universal norm, but also the thrill, of the human experience. The resume photo helps restore it. Playboy and Playgirl magazines exploit it..The next time you think yo u prefer pure text resumes, ask yourself this question Would facebook inc be worth more than its $50 billion+ valuation today if it had been called Textbook? Not a chance.3. Most of us- including those of you who are recruiters- will readily admit, if not reveal, that one picture is worth 1,000 words. As long as that rate of exchange remains so extraordinarily high, we will remain privatelyand at least unconsciously susceptible to the influence of graphic images- including, if not especially, graphic images in resumes, no matter what our public professions.4. Especially susceptible to graphic images in resumes? Yes, because the average recruiter is not reviewing only one resume. Assuming that most applicants got the message about the evils of graphics, the few diehards or innocents who do add graphics will stand out from the pack or pile. Ignoring graphics in a resume is a bit like trying to ignore the elephant in the living room. You may somehow shoo it away, insisting it doesnt bel ong there, but the memory of it will stick- like lice on an elephant.5. Viewing the images may set off a more imaginative response in the recruiter- a response that could optimize the potential of the job or of the applicant. Scientists at the University of Sydneys Centre for the Mind in Australia have invented a thinking cap that uses electrical current to inhibit the text-loving left lobe of the brain to allow the image and imagination stimulated and stimulating right lobe to be creatively jump-started. Sourcethesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3404056/Thinking-cap-zaps-brain-to-make-people-more-creative.html.To the extent that viewing images embedded in a resume engages the right-brain, the experience may trigger similar creativity in a resume-reviewing recruiter.6. Despite purist recruiter protestations that graphics in resumes do not and should not influence us, scientific research suggests the contrary. A very recent 2010 study, titled A randomized trial of computer-based communica tions using imagery and text information to alter representations of heart disease risk and motivate protective behavior, published in the British Journal of Health Psychology concluded, The combination of CSM-based text and imagery appears to be most effective in instilling risk representations that motivate protective behaviour. What this means is that blending graphics with text has a greater impact on motivation and emotional response than either alone. It may be objected that what this really proves is that the negative response to the combination may be stronger than to either alone, much like the reaction to text-based tobacco warnings complemented with photos of diseased lungs is stronger than to either by itself. The corresponding reaction in a recruiter would be a more strongly motivated rejection of the resume and applicant at the sight of text and graphics together than to either alone.Alas, the fallacy in this argument is apparent The negative response to images of disea sed hearts or lungs is in response to the content of the images, not to their mere presence. In the case of a resume photo of a gorgeous applicant, a negative response to the image content per se is unlikely, with the exception of feelings like envy and rivalry.A negative recruiter reaction is far more likely, in virtue of company and industry policy and encouragement, to be a prescribed reaction, not a visceral one. That negative institutionalized reaction may not be enough to offset the ancient hardwired pupil-dilating pleasurable response in viewing someone attractive. What is implied in all of these hypotheses and observations is not any accusation.Rather, these are cautionary reminders that the effort to stick to an industry or personal policy, however right, wise and fair, may be subverted by ancient distractions, powerful rewards and temptations.Prehistoric distractions, rewards and temptations that are just as old, if not older, than those plaguing and compromising our spotty adherence to the Biblical Ten Commandments and to most other rules._________________________Recruiter.com Note It would be extremely interesting to hear from you about exactly what it is that you do regarding or after discovering a resume with graphics.Do you or other recruiters you know really automatically reject or discard the resumes? Is there a company policy governing the processing of resumes with graphics? Do you really otherwise disqualify them merely on the grounds that there is a photo of the candidate or a thumbnail image of the Parthenon in the upper right corner of each page? How much latitude do you allow an applicant? How much latitude are you allowed as a recruiter? Is there any software you are using that screens and filters out resumes with graphics?Wed love to read what you have to say and what your experiences with resume graphics have been. Questions to Ask Before You Work With a Music PR Firm
Questions to Ask Before You Work With a Music PR FirmQuestions to Ask Before You Work With a Music PR FirmIs it time to hire a music PR firm? Its a big decision. After all, PR is expensive, and the results are never guaranteed. Music PR, orpublic relationsfor music,is the strategic promotion ofa new release, tour, or othermusic relatednewsto the public via the media.People who work in PR liaise between labels and/or musicians and the media to try and get album reviews, profiles of the band, reviews of live shows and so on. Many music PR companies have a dedicated focus- for instance, they only do print media or only digital. Some PR firms have an even more pointed focus, in that they only do college and clubradio promotionwhere they work to get anon airplugwith a popular radio station geared at a specific market,or they only do online promotions and social media work with keyonline influencers, for example. Campaigns andPromotions Most music PR is done on a campaign basis. If a la bel wants to promote a new release, they may hire a PR company for a platzdeckchen period, during which the PR company will try to generate as much press as possible. If the band is touring during the promotional campaign, sometimes thePR firmwill also do a round of press for the tour, or sometimes they will charge an extra fee for that service, especially in the case of large PR firms working with large record labels. At the end of any campaign, the PR company issues a report with press clippings of all of the coverage the album received. They may also report at intervals during the campaign. Before you sign up with a music PR firm, ask yourself- and them- plenty of questions, so you can be sure the PR firm is the right choice for you. Cost Concerns PR is expensive. In many cases, it is very expensive. Although hiring PR can eventually help you make money, you have to put it into the right space in your budget. You need money to get your release ready, distribution set up, and a reserve to cover the costs of playing shows. If you have to divert money from these expenses to pay for PR, you may not be able to afford to hire a PR company right now. If you compromise the basics, you wont get the most of your PR campaign anyway, since you wont be in the stelle to take advantage of it. Self-Promotion If you want a small, regional promotional campaign, chances are you can handle the work yourself. It will require some research and time, but if money is an issue, this might be your best bet. A PR company is most valuable when you are ready to mount a national promotional campaign that you might not have the time or contacts to accomplish yourself. If you dont have the time and inclination to do a regional press campaign, outside PR can certainly handle the job. Just be aware that a campaign of that level is easily handled in-house and if money is a problem, this kind of campaign is a luxury. Target Product A PR campaign shouldnt be general. It should be c entered around a specific project and have specific goals. Such a project may be a new release or a tour. It should have a abflug date, and that start date should give the PR company plenty of time to run the campaign. For example, dont hire a PR firm three days before your tour starts. Effectiveness What is the likelihood that the specific project you want PR to work on will actually generate enough press coverage to justify the investment in outside PR? Be realistic. Your first indie release is probably not going to get reviewed in Rolling Stone. The best time to hire PR is when you have built up a little bit of buzz through your own work and have a project with a good promotion angle. This angle can be anything from an album promotion anchored to some tour dates or a unique story about how the project came together, so the PR company has something to start with. Realistic Expectations When you hire a PR firm, you arent buying guaranteed press and exposure. You are paying for the service of PR- someone to send out your music, tour dates, and news to the media, follow-up with them, and try to convince them that you deserve coverage. They cant make anyone want to cover your projects and cant make anyone give the music a good review. Even the best PR company in the world with a lofty past client list cant guarantee even a single person will want to write about or play your music. Thats reality. Get comfortable that you are paying for effort, not guaranteed fame and fortune. Possible Overselling Hire a PR company that is going to be honest about what they think they can achieve. If someone is trying to sell you the moon, steer clear. A PR company that is really on your side can sell you their services without pulling the wool over your eyes. Take promises that sound a little far fetched as red flags. Reputable Firm Concerns Hiring a PR company can be a great move for your career. When youre working with an established PR company, then you know th at first hurdle- the building of press contacts- has already been tackled. An envelope bearing the logo of a known PR company can carry a lot of weight at a magazine that receives hundreds of promosand press releasesa day. Unfortunately, working with a PR firm can be extraordinarily expensive, and there is no guarantee of any payoff. Some PR campaigns end with zilch in the way of press, but you still have to pay the bill. For this reason, small labels should think carefully about hiring a music PR firm, for many reasons, including 1. How many clients does the firm currently have on their roster, and dothey have ample time to dedicate to your project? 2. Who else do they currently represent, and could other clients be in direct competition with you or your campaign? 3. Where has the firm recently landed media coverage, and what outlets do they think might be a good fit for you? 4. What other artists or bands have they worked with in the past, and are they at a similar level and genre ? 5.How often do they send reports, and how can you see who they have pitched on your behalf? You dont want to spend a lot of money on a PR firm or campaign only to see very little come from it. Start with a clear vorstellung of what you want, what you expect from a successful campaign, and the time frame you require. Only move forward if you are confident that the PR company has addressed all of your questions and can deliver on their promises.

Nicholas Steepe - Charles Sturt University Equity Diversity Project Manager
Nicholas Steepe - Charles Sturt University Equity Diversity Project Manager Nicholas Steepe Equity Diversity Project ManagerPosted October 8, 2018, by Jenny Sakr Nic has grown up in regional Australia and currently resides in Bathurst. Social justice is a core value of his and is proud to have contributed to the conversationaround youth mental health, marriage equality, and advocated strongly for increased inclusion for LGBTIQA+ individuals in regional Australia.Whilst working and studying, Nic also volunteers for The Pinnacle Foundation and sits on the Management Committee as the Scholar Advocate, an organisation that provides scholarships and mentorships to disadvantaged and/or marginalised LGBTIQA+ people. What is your current role and what does it involve?Im the Project Manager, Equity Diversity at Charles Sturt University. I am responsible for the development, management and completion of equity and diversity projects and the delivery of equity and diversity initiatives and p rograms. This role supports the Universitys objective of creating a diverse and equitable environment that enhances CSUs diversity. One of my major responsibilities is the development and implementation of the Universitys Gender Equity Strategy.Tell us about your study journeyI attended public school all my life and graduated in 2011 from Dubbo College Senior Campus. As I welches the first in my family to graduate Year 12, I did elend have a desire to attend University, but through the support of my Society Culture teacher, Miss Hudson, I enrolled in a co-enrolment course with TAFE and Charles Sturt University in Dubbo. This involved completing a Certificate IV and Diploma in Community Services, in conjunction with some Bachelor of Social Work subjects. In the last two years of the degree, it was purely University subjects so it still took the same amount of time as it would have, I just came out with a Diploma as well through the pathways course.During my last placement, I obtain ed full-time employment with headspace Dubbo and continued to work them after I graduated. I wasnt sure how I would cope with further study, however, I knew I wanted to pursue additional learning. So to test my capabilities to manage study, full-time work and other extracurricular activities, I enrolled in a Post Graduate Certificate in Project Management. As I felt I could handle the part-time study load, in 2018, I began my Masters of Social Work (research/dissertation strand) which I aim to graduate from at the end of 2019.What was your first job and what do you think it taught you?Every job that I have had has taught me something. Starting my working life at Go-Lo and Sams Warehouse, as well as being a cleaner for a number of years, taught me to appreciate the role that retail and cleaners have in our society, and to ensure I do my best to make their job easier. My first community services job (part-time) was at the Schizophrenia Fellowship, Personal Helpers and Mentors Program, and it provided me with a solid foundation of skills that I would (and will continue) to use in my life. It also taught me the importance of reflection, both internally and externally, to learn from past experiences in order to grow. Why did you want to study social work?I wanted to study social work to help people - as clich as that might be. Based on my own personal experiences with mental health, identity issues, bullying and family issues, I saw an opportunity where I could help others, as others had helped me throughout my journey. Due to the fact that I was notlagelage sure about even studying, social work provided me with different pathways and options that I could select, such as child protection, mental health, advocacy, community development, which was beneficial for me as my mind was not completely set on a path.Name a career highlightThere are so many career highlights, that I just dont know which one to choose. Marching down the main street of Dubbo in full drag for the Central West Pride March? The various nominations and accolades that have been awarded to me? The friendships and bonds that I have forged that will last a lifetime? The incredible stories of resilience that I have encountered from so many different people? The opportunities that have been presented to me? The confidence in my skills and abilities that I have ascertained? The change in attitudes and beliefs in the Central West? Most recently, I was asked to be a part of four Charles Sturt University Dubbo Alumni banners, which I was humbled to accept. At the unveiling ceremony, amongst well-established professionals in the Central West, my niece and nephew attended, and the joy on their faces landseeing me on a banner was such a highlight. But more than that, it is the possibility that I will inspire them (and perhaps others) to go to University.Name something you still dont knowThere is lots that I still do not know, hence why I am undertaking more education (and most likely will for the rest of my life). Knowledge is power, and you are ignorant if you think that you know everything. Also, feeling like you have all the answers is detrimental to having an open and honest discussion with others, as you will not be able to understand and take into consideration their point of view or their reality.Whats the most important career tip someone has given you?Whilst I have had many tips throughout my life from incredible mentors, the tip that resonated with me the most was change starts small. It is incremental and we, as advocates of social justice, should ensure the momentum continues - CJ Thomas. Change does not happen overnight, and we all play a part in making it happen keep fighting for what you believe in. This has rung true throughout my professional life, even if I was not given this advice until recently. What are important qualities and skills should people have if they want to get into social work?An open mind, a commitment to social justice, empathy, li sten (not just for the sake of replying) and critical thinking. Social work is quite broad, but if you are committed to changing an individual, a community, or society in general, there will be a place for you within the profession.Whats next for you?Who knows, really? For someone who questioned whether they would be complete Year 12, I never imagined that I would be where I currently am. I do not see this as a bad thing, I will just continue my journey with an open mind and limited expectations. For now, I will continue my role with Charles Sturt University and further my knowledge through my Masters of Social Work.Inspired to make a difference in your community?
